Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diseases and surgery of the visual pathways. The eye is a spherical sensory organ, measuring approximately 22-26 mm. Its average weight is 7.5 grams, and its volume is 6.5 ml. The eye is located in a bony cavity called the orbit. Despite its small size, the eye constitutes a significant portion of the stimuli that reach the brain. The eyeball consists of three layers: the outer layer is the sclera (the white of the eye) and the cornea; the middle layer includes the iris (the structure that gives our eyes their color) and the lens; and the inner layer is the retina (the nerve layer).

Which Diseases Does Ophthalmology Treat?

  • Glaucoma (Eye pressure)
  • Uveitis
  • Stye
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Cataract
  • Blepharitis
  • Astigmatism
  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • Retinal Diseases (Macular degeneration, diabetic and hypertensive retinal hemorrhages)
  • Lacrimal Duct Obstruction
  • Lacrimal Sac Inflammation
  • Strabismus
  • Amblyopia (Lazy eye)
  • Ptosis (Drooping eyelid)
  • Keratitis
  • Keratoconus

Diagnosis and Treatment Services of the Ophthalmology Department

Patients visiting the Ophthalmology Department of our hospital first undergo computerized eye measurements using the Autorefractometer and computerized eye pressure measurement by our eye technicians. The specialist physician listens to the patient's complaints and conducts a detailed eye examination. After the examination, an appropriate treatment method is recommended for the patient.

Ophthalmology is also a surgical branch. Some eye diseases are treated with medical drugs (glaucoma, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, uveitis, scleritis, episcleritis, keratitis), while others are treated with glasses or contact lenses (myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, keratoconus, presbyopia). The phacoemulsification method is used in cataract treatment, vitrectomy is performed for retinal diseases, strabismus surgery is done for strabismus patients, and treatments like laser therapy are used to correct vision defects, lacrimal duct obstructions, and ptosis. Some glaucoma patients also require surgical intervention. The ophthalmology department is closely integrated with technology, and many devices are used for diagnosis and treatment. The following devices are used:

  • Autorefractometer
  • Tonometer
  • Slit Lamp
  • Computerized Visual Field
  • OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
  • FFA (Fundus Fluorescein Angiography)
  • Optical Biometry
  • Ocular Ultrasound
  • Argon Laser
  • YAG Laser
  • Excimer Laser
